Abstract

Over a six month period of research through physical site visits, archival exploration, and online investigation, we sought to understand what defines Harlem’s architecture. Our findings revealed that Harlem’s architectural identity can be understood through the lens of Harlem Modernism and Black Modernism.
Our study began with the Harlem Hospital Center, which served as the epicenter of our research and a starting point for uncovering the neighborhood’s intertwined history and culture. The hospital not only stands as a landmark of architectural innovation but also as a cultural hub that supported significant figures in Harlem’s creative and social movements. The individuals who worked and stayed there played small yet pivotal roles in shaping the larger narrative of Harlem’s transformation, marking the beginning of major artistic, social, and architectural developments that defined the Harlem Renaissance and beyond.
