Abstract
-
This pattern was found on quilts African American slaves made as they tried to escape north from the American South. Called "Tumbling Blocks," it's message was to communicate to slaves that they were to pack their things quickly- their escape via the Underground Railroad network was happening soon.
The structure, together with the weaving, forms an up-side down basket, a utility commonly used in moving things in communities of the African diaspora and others.
