Abstract
-
This handmade piece celebrates Haitian heritage through intentional color, symbol, and craft, reflecting diasporic connections in Harlem. The red hibiscus conveys boldness, softened by the pink border to suggest care. Blue and yellow skirt layers signify unity, freedom, hope, and renewal, with Vodou vévé signs, beaded frames, and imagery highlighting cultural and historical narratives. Cowrie shells at the hem reference ancestral heritage and protection. Every hand-sewn stitch and choice of materials emphasizes authenticity and the care invested in preserving cultural memory.
